Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most important and widely celebrated festivals in Hindu culture and is observed by millions of people across the world, especially in India and other South Asian countries. Diwali celebrates the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.
The festival typically spans five days, with the main celebration falling on the third day. People light diyas (oil lamps) and candles, decorate their homes with rangoli (colorful patterns), and set off fireworks. It’s also a time for family gatherings, exchanging gifts and sweets, and praying for prosperity.
Each region in India has unique customs for Diwali. Many observe it as the day Lord Rama returned to his kingdom after a 14-year exile and defeating the demon king Ravana, symbolizing the victory of good over evil. Others celebrate it as the day Goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, is honored.
Diwali is a time of joy, generosity, and new beginnings, bringing together people of all ages and backgrounds in a spirit of unity and festivity.
Diwali is celebrated with particular authentic foods and snacks.
